2020-07-28 Great day on the water at DML

Dried Meat Lake

Ted's Report:

After lunch, Spencer, Louise, and I headed out on the boat.  I went for a ski, then Spencer and I wake foiled, then Louise wake surfed, then Spencer wake surfed, and then we all took a turn again.  We didn't quit until about 4:00.  Then Louise and I went for a SUP ride, but I didn't have my Garmin Watch, so maybe it didn't happen!

Great Day!

2020-07-25 Second Update - Carnage at Wabamun

Wabamun Lake Carnage

Kent's Report:

Jim was on the water by 10 or so and I made it over for 11.  I started out by forgetting to take my foil cover off the stabilizer.   No you can’t foil with a cover on.  It was good foiling on 7m flyer.

About 90 minutes in, Jim dropped into the water for quite a while - so Kent went over to see if he was alright.  Jim was sitting on his board, so I foiled close and just as I was going to drop into the water I lost control and foiled straight into his sail

Lucile immediately pointed out that there were only two guys on the water so how the heck did we hit each other?   Nice of her to blame us both since I was moving and Jim was sitting on his board.

I hope the Sailworks guys can fix it as good as new.   In the meantime, I think I will have to pay for Jim’s beer until they do.

Lac St. Anne - Alberta Beach

Andreas's Update:

Saturday was a great day foiling at AB Beach. Mike was on his 15m I was on a 7m foiling. A bit up and down but cleared out for several solid hours.

It was great getting a good session on the foil.....now I just need to learn how to turn!

I made a few to toeside but the switch didn't happen. My foot is swollen and my back has a few marks from the foil but all in all a good day.

For those of you that didn't get out Sunday, sorry I should have mentioned I was golfing.....which is a guarantee for wind.

Mike's Update:

Re Alberta beach Saturday Session - It was just Andreas and myself and a couple of other kiters out.

Andreas was foiling on his 7mt  I was hanging onto my 15 Soul ….to say the wind was a bit variable was an understatement..at times I needed every bit of power just to stay planing and at others I was holding way too much kite.

We had a bunch of unstable clouds over us that were quickly amassing and turning into T cells just to the east of us.  I found myself basically hiding from the downdraft off the clouds and actually had enough space to do so even dodged most of a shower that hammered half my normal reach area.

It was an interesting session and Andreas was having a good time even in the crazy wind.

I made another trip out on Sunday hoping for a ride but unfortunately, there were too many people all over our grass launch area to launch a kite safely so it was a nice drive.

Dried Meat Lake - Tillicum Beach

Ted's Update:

Thanks for all the help and advice on getting my Strava account updated.  It appears that there are a few others (Mike/Gerry) who were more concerned than I was.  Anyway, the site must be back up, because my watch sync'd by itself last night.

It appears that I did get out for a few sessions on Saturday, just like I thought!  Here is the proof...

I am managing to keep my speed up a bit during my jibes.  I had a really good one last week at about the 11.5km mark.  My board was on the water, but my speed only dropped a few km...  You can tell it is a jibe and not a long reach because the reaches are all the width of the lake - I have to jibe or I run into the shore on either side.....

I could have foiled again on Sunday, but we had company over, and I was pretty sore from a long session Saturday with lots of pumping in the lulls and tight grips on the boom during the gusts!

Keho Lake

Ross's Update:

My update was, Matt and I on Thurs and Friday kiting at Keho.  Lighter winds 9m and 11m but sunny and high 20s both days.

Sat no kiting, went cross biking in Jasper.

Lac La Biche:

Handre didn't report, but I see from Strava that he had his first foiling session of the year!

2020-07-25 Did it happen?

OMG - the Garmin site is down so I can't upload my track.  I know I went out foiling - but without Garmin - did it really happen???

Pigeon Lake - Brad's Place

Harold's Report:

Blaine and I had a great day at Pigeon.  I was on my 6.1 and my 99 liter board.  Blaine was on his foil, first with a 4.7 and then with a 6.1.

Three hours of good wind, strong enough to set up the mid lake swells and strong enough to allow me to power around them.  I went home smiling.

Blaine really looks solid on his foil.  No problem with jibes and he’s very close to planing jibes.  Fun to watch him progress.  Kent, watch out!

Brad – thanks for allowing us to use your place.  We saved a beer for you, but you’ll have to collect it on another day.

Alberta Beach

No report - but I see from Strava that Mike was kiting.

Slave Lake

No report - but I see from Strava that Gerry was out on this 6.6 hucker and Roberts.  Looks like he also had an overpowered session on his 6.0 flyer and foil.

Dried Meat Lake - Tillicum Beach

Ted's Report:

I had a good session on my 6.0 Flyer, then 7.0 Flyer, then my 6.0 Flyer again.  Unfortunately, I can't upload my track as the Garmin servers are down, so I don't know if anyone will believe that I was foiling or not - although I do have some photos, thanks to Louise.  The weeds are becoming more of an issue.  Once out, it is not terrible, but I did have to stop every few reaches to clear what was usually just a single reed from the mast of my foil.  Good sail - about 22km in total - that's 44 jibes - some better than others....

.

Lots of weed getting in and out...

2020-07-22 More Wake Surfing at DML

Tillicum Beach - Dried Meat Lake

Ted's Report:

Spencer, Louise, and I headed out on the boat for more Wake Foiling tonight.  It was a beautiful night and fairly calm.  Spencer now has more than 10-minute rides, and only falls when he tries to pump way outside of the wake or tries to jump the fin out of the water......  I, on the other hand, am having longer rides, but I still get lots of practice water starting.....

2020-07-21 Double Dip at Dried Meat Lake

Tillicum Beach - Dried Meat Lake

Ted's Report:

I got out foiling after lunch.  The weather station said it was only blowing 16kph, but I think the gusts were a bit higher.  I decided to give it a try.  I went down to the public beach thinking it would be easier to get out through the weeds there than at home.  The wind was now from the south, where it had been from the north for the last few days.  The North winds had piled up the weeds on the North side of the piers, leaving the south side clear.  The south wind filled in all the gaps on the south side of the piers so now there were no gaps and no alternative than to wade/swim through them.  It was quite a struggle getting through, but once out, it wasn't bad, although I did pick up a weed every now and then.

I was on my 7.0 flyer, and conditions were perfect for it.  I foiled almost all of the time and even kept up my speed through a couple of jibes (although the board was firmly planted on the water).

I sailed for about 22km and only slogged on the last reach - or if I had collected a few weeds.  (It is possible to foil with one or two weeds trailing behind, but it becomes unstable if you get too many.)

After supper, the wind calmed down, so Louise, Spencer, and I headed out on the boat, and Spencer and I did some wake foiling.  We had a great night and didn't put the boat away until after 8:00.  I am even starting to get the hang of pumping - although nowhere near as good as Spencer.

2020-07-20 Update from Big Jim - New Board!

I finally got my foil board from Rob Mulder and got out for two 1.5 hour sessions.

It is 7 feet long and 35 inches wide and about 160 litres I think. It is really nice to be light when up on the foil and the thin cross-section penetrates the wind a little better than the Formula board I was using.

There is not a lot of nose, so you have to step way around when tacking. Rob did a very pretty paint job on it. May have bought my last board! ( I have said that before).

I took a picture in the bubble wrap. Pretty much the shape of a sheet of plywood.

Look forward to seeing everyone in September. Will have three cabins, three kitchens and 12 bedrooms so it should be safe!

Cheers JC

2020-07-19 More Sailing/Kiting/Foiling Action!

Alberta Beach - Lac St. Anne

Mike's Update:

Another kite session at Alberta Beach.    Matt got out early and his wind report had Ross getting out early with Andreas and myself not far behind.    Guess it was better before I arrived. I thought I could ride my ten but as soon as I had it ready to go the wind dropped another notch and needed my 15.

Andreas was doing well on his foil on a 7 mtr, while Matt and I were on our 15s and Ross borrowed Matts  12 speed and had a pretty good session.

I'm not sure if I have ever seen so many windy days in a short period of time in Alberta for years.

Mike's Photo of Alberta Beach

Ross's Update:

We....Andreas, Mike, Matt and I were at AB. We had a good time until about 1400 when the wind died.  I got there early, by shortly after 1030 and kited 9, then 11 and then 12.  Andrea's was ripping it up foiling with a 7m.  Mike on a 15m...he was a bit later on the water.  Matt was 12 and then 15, he was the really early bird.

When we left the place was busy with family's coming out to enjoy the nice summer day.

Andrea's and I then came back to the city and went to Three Vikings and had a snack, a very late breakfast?  and drank some, ok... a few, beers in the sun looking out over the world.  A good day.

Jim's Place - Wabamun Lake

Big Air Jim's Report:

Good Sunday morning to you and Louise. I’m enjoying your blog this morning and thought I’d add the details of Saturday’s action at Wabamun lake.

On Friday the westerly flow was just a tease. Cam got in a solid hour of “milk’n” it. I felt left out so I joined him late and managed one reach where I was able to foil 3/4 of the way across the lake. Milk’n it just like Cam, but when I tacked to come home there was nothing. I slogged all the way back.

The forecast for wind Saturday if I recall was not promising. However, I was surprised to see solid whitecaps shore-to-shore at 10:00 AM.  Cam had to work, so after a hearty breakfast of sausages and pancakes Cynthia and I ripped it up. I foiled with a fully powered 5.3 Revo and Cynthia held on to a 4.7 Revo for an hour but then she rigged down to a 4.2 Revo. Finally, after two hours on the water we were joined by Blaino. Blaine also had a great session with his 5.3 flyer.

Notably missing in all the fun was Grandpa Kent. Kent was busy with Benjamin.  As we were feeling the need for a cold one after Blaine’s second session on his 6.0 flyer, Kent arrived by boat and we sat in lawn chairs 6 feet apart for some adequately distant socializing.

Then it was 5:30, where did the day go?

Fun was had by all.

Brad's Place - Pigeon Lake

Harold's Report:

Here’s the word on Saturday sailing.  It really was a pleasure.

Friday, not so much.  The wind at Lac Ste Anne was fluky .  Just enough to get on a plane with my 6.1 and 99 liter, but not enough to turn cleanly in the shore swell (“not cleanly” means I fell a lot).  Still a good day.

I headed over to Brad’s place on Saturday and caught it just about perfectly.  It was building when I arrived, and I think it peaked at about 11AM when I hit the water.  I sailed my 5.3 and my 84 liter JP Freewave, and was either powered or overpowered for about 1 ½ hours.  Vadim showed up and got some rips.  Then the wind gradually died and I packed it up by about  1:30P.  Vadim tried a little longer with a 6.5 on a big board, but it was one of those situations where the gusts sucked him out and the lulls left him standing in the middle of the lake.

The session was a pure pleasure.   There was enough wind that those rolling swells came up in the middle of the lake.   The wind was steady, strong and solidly out of the NW, so it was just one turn after another.  You would have loved it.

But it sounds like Lac Ste Anne was pretty much the same, so we all had fun.

I am very curious to hear how everyone enjoyed the other lakes.

Tillicum Beach - Dried Meat Lake

Ted's Update:

After breakfast, I drove down to the public beach and rigged my 6.0 Flyer and foil board.  It is easier to get out through the weeds with the foil at the public beach than in front of my house.  I was hoping for a really good, controlled session - it was not to be....

I got going right away but then got seriously overpowered and exploded a few times.

Louise came by and took some photos just as I was coming in to re-rig.  I rigged my 5.2 and went out again.  I am not sure if the wind had come off a bit, but the 5.2 wasn't quite enough.  More pumping practice with not great results.  I did have some good runs when I did get up, and then a few really scary ones when a big gust came thought, and then I had trouble holding on.

I came in again for a rest and then went out again on my 6.0.  The wind had settled down a bit, and I had a few good runs - but then the wind picked up so much I had trouble getting back.  I could easily have been on my 4.8 and Stubby, but I didn't have them with me.

I was tired and sore, so I quit for the day.  I sat in my lawn chair and had a bottle of water while I waited for my stuff to dry.  Then I  packed everything up and headed home.

2020-07-17 Foiling and Kiting update

Alberta Beach - Lac St. Anne

Mikes Report:

Kiting at Alberta beach   Ross Andreas and Mike

Once again great day for me on my 15 mtr    Ross and Andreas (foiling )  had mixed results as wind was light and up and down

..after

we called it a day and decided to visit the local outdoor patio for beers and wings, hanging with all the local bikers  (social distancing was practiced )   and of course the wind picked up the whole time we were there and was still blowing steady when we headed for home  we were tempted to do another session  but none of us could face dragging on a cold wet suit again  …

Dried Meat Lake

Ted's Report:

I got it backwards!.  Louise and I went for a bike ride to Camrose and back in the morning when I should have been foiling.  The way to town was slow (headwind), but the way home was fast and fun!

After lunch, I tried foiling on my 7.0.  The wind was not quite enough.  I went to the public beach because getting out through the weeds there is a bit easier.  Louise was my lucky charm.  She came by to check on me and take a couple of photos.  I was about to quit, and then caught a couple of wind gusts and got a couple of good solid foiling reaches.  Stoked, I kept going, but after she left, I got pumping a few times, and almost got it, but slogged most of the time.  I am getting great pivot jibe and tacking practice!

2020-07-16 Spencer and Ted - Wake Foiling

With Louise Driving (thank you Louise), Spencer and I did some more Wake Surfing today.  It was a bit windy, (almost enough to Windfoil - well maybe Kent could have made it work), so the lake was a bit rough, which made it a bit tricky.

Spencer and I are working on our pumping.  Spencer is doing really well, and can often pump his way back into the wake.  I am not catching on quite as quick - not sure why that would be a surprise😎

We got the boat put away, just before a big thunderstorm hit - wow the whole lake was just waves and spray for a 15 minute period!

Here is a video of Spencer and I surfing!

2020-07-15 - More Updates from Gerry and Mike

Alberta Beach

Mike's Update:

Ross and I headed out to Alberta beach

I had a good day for me great sessions on my 10 and then 15  Ross was underpowered on his nine and couldn’t find all the parts for his 11 to make it work.  He finally discovered them after he had his suit off.

He then tried his 12 Speed to no avail as it was not working.  He did get a short session using my 10 Soul but it backed off a bit more than when I had gone out on my 15.

My legs were feeling tight after yesterday’s session but loosened up as the session went on.  It feels good to get a few days on the water: water really is my element.

Slave Lake - Canyon Creek

Gerry's Update:

The wind was on the lighter side this morning, so waited for the forecast 30 to 50.  Finally gave up waiting so rigged a 6.0 Flyer and the foil board. The wind was straight west, so there was no wind by the shore.

Once I got out, it was way too much for the 6.0

I rigged the 6.6 and Roberts and had a great afternoon doing an upwind and downwinder. I was very powered to start, then just right after a while.

I came in as I thought it was starting to back off and grabbed the 6.0 and foil again.  It was still to much, so I called it a day!

2020-07-15 Another Great Day

Dried Meat Lake (DML)

Ted's Update:

I took out my Shark and 6.6 Hucker.  I was pretty well fully powered all the time from 11:30 until 2:15 when I came off the water because it was starting to die.  I did sail out of the wind on a couple of jibes, but for the most part, it was really steady, with a couple of gusts that just about blew me off the water.

Overall, however, it was very comfortable sailing.

Wabamun Lake

Kent's Update:

The phone rang off the hook in the AM as everyone decided what to do..    Blaine said he was in and started driving to my place around noon.   We went to Jim's and sailed until 5pm on 5.2 and 6.0.  lots of fun and this was the third day in a row I sailed with someone on Wabamun..   Wow!
Blaine after a sess...

2020-07-14 Windy in Alberta!

Wabamun Lake

Kent's Report:

What a couple of days.   Yesterday Cam, Jim, and Kent all foiled 5.2 or 5.3 for 2 hours +

Today we had almost a gorge day.   Started out foiling 4.5, 4.8, and 4.7..   I could barely hang on to the 4.5 and Cam and Jim were rocking jibes on the bigger sails!   It picked up and I foiled 3.8  Cam on 4.2 and Jim finned 4.7….    After a bit of finning Jim moved to 3.7 foiling….

Cam left and Jim and I went out on 5.2’s.  quickly moved down to 3.7 for Jim and 4.5 for Kent….

What a day..   still blowing but we had to stop.

Jim's Report

I had the best 3.7 day of my life yesterday.  It simply worked great on the foil.  I've never not had to worry about how I could get home if it got holey or the wind backed off even just a little with my 3.7.  I hated it.  Now it's been re-born, it just needed a foil fin. I will now hope for a 3.7 day again soon.  Oh ya, sometimes the water start just wasn't happening.  So what, the uphaul with a 3.7 is very flattering. It makes me feel very very strong.

Thanks to Kent for the superb gybe clinic.  If anyone wants to know how to gybe, just fall in the water, and watch Kent as he soars past port side, then starboard, then portside again, then starboard, then ........................ oh! my neck. I feel so privileged to have this on-the-water clinic when Kent drops by.

Great fun with Cam and Kent, (sailing and looking like Kent with Kents blue and white 4.7 revo) and the Kentster yesterday, and Monday too.  Friday isn't looking too bad either?

Have fun out there everyone, and stay safe.

Jim's Update:

I have also mastered "the walk of shame".  Yesterday I forgot to mention that while being blown off the water on my 4.7 foiling, I tried the pumpkin and the 4.7.  I realized right away that I wasn't coming home on it. Thanks to Kent for the rescue.  Kent drove my van to the range road east of me to drag my sorry ass home.

Thanks again Kent.

Alberta Beach

Harold's Report...

Like the Wabamun crowd, Al, Tim, Ross, Mike and I (and in the end, Vadim), had a couple of great days.

Monday Al sailed his 5.5 and his 85 liter board, and I sailed my 5.3 and my 99.  Lots of bumping and flying, and some pretty good swells.  Ross was the star.  Occasionally the swells set up moving to the shore in a series, and I was lucky enough to be in the right place to watch Ross zig zag back and forth on the swells from far out almost to shore.  Beautiful.

Tuesday – Ross has given you the lowdown.  From a windsurfing (finning?) point of view, I thought it was a blast.  Wild gusts, tricky lulls, changing wind directions, chop everywhere and huge swells.  It was challenging, but an incredible adrenalin rush, especially on the swells.  Tim was on a 5.4, Al was on a 4.8 (and briefly a 4.2), and I was on a 5.3 (until I determined that I couldn’t sail very well with my sail at right angles to my board), then a 4.2 (until I determined that I was too impatient to wait out the lulls) and mostly a 4.7 which was the perfect compromise.

Ross's Report

Today 7m kiting all day, mix of sun and cloud and some decent swell. Finally quit at about 1700, also out of gas and wind still blowing when I left.  Probably better kiting than windsurfing at AB.

"finning".......is this some type of foil snobbery.

Reply from Kent....

Yep.  We foilers fin only under duress.  Sometimes the social pressure to conform and show our fins is just toooooooo much and we have to expose our short side.

Most of the time we just say fuck it and stay above it all.

Sorry ted.  No photos at all.

Tim's comment: "Harold won the award for most sails rigged today. I think 4. 4.2-5.2. Up and down, but a great day."

Pigeon Lake

Mike's report:

Decided to keep Blaine company at Pigeon.   Sure enjoyed the drive out there versus AB smooth roads versus losing my dental work .😎.   Blaine and I arrived within minutes of each other and debated 4.2 or 4.7  for a while deciding on the larger choice ...I took my small board but after a couple of reaches with holes from hell opted for my 95 litre.  Variable was definitely the term.

The direction was switching 45 degrees about every five minutes and at times waterstarts were a challenge. I went up to my 5.2 and that was working much better but the wind gauge was reporting gusts at 27 mph. Yet there were still holes you could not water start in.

Blaine was on his foil for a while and was going from slogging to oh shit but kept the kit in the water for the most part. ..     Brad showed up after babysitting duty to a decent stronger session on his 85 and 4.7 and we ripped it up for a while but Blaine decided to do a downwinder for some reason and we watched him get smaller to the east then finally made it to shore.

Just before Brad and I got caught out with almost zero ..painful slog home with a couple of really dicey water starts ..    Brad decided to go out on his foil for a session but Blaine and I decided to pilot the hottub with a bit of aiming fluid to ease the task watching Brad until he joined us ...whereupon we solved all the worlds problems ....   by the time we packed to leave at about 9:00 the lake was getting glassy.

Slave Lake

Gerry's Report:

Blaine seems to be making a habit of the downwind session ending with a walk. I guess if he's doing the whole circuit while keeping ahold of his gear he's learning. :-)

Yesterday, after the wind gusting 50 all night, I decided I would cut my grass. Blaine was complaining it was looking a little shabby. I then headed for Eddies as on straight west winds it is usually my call.

The airport reading said the wind was west 40 to 60km. Decided to rig a 5.3 and take the 105 stubby to start to make sure I could get off the beach.  The water is high and it was chest-deep at the willows and the wind is usually lighter by shore.  I managed to get going while dodging deadhead sticks etc. and the board kept sliding out.  This usually happens when I haven't sailed the Stubby for a while, after having been mostly sailing my Roberts.

I picked my way out through the break, sliding out the back end over every wave then and correcting it.  Once through the break I looked down to see I was dragging a ton of weeds, hence the spin out. I dropped in to clear the weeds and from then on probably could go no more than 100ft without picking up weeds. Weeds and weed clumps were everywhere and the Tri Fin really picks them up.

The swell was huge and smooth outside.  Proper equipment outside would be 4.8 and 85L, but probably would have wound up in the willows trying to get out. I decided this wasn't going to work, so drove home and rigged up there.  West Wind doesn't really fill in till about a half-mile out so I rigged a 5.6 and my Roberts 23.  That worked out OK. Powered the first half mile the overpowered after that, but doable. Sailed about an hour till I saw a huge black cloud coming with a wall of rain and called it quits.

Most of the debris appears to have flushed through at my place. Only saw 1 tree and nicked 1 stick. Weeds started out pretty thick at the wind line, then seemed to be mostly gone by the time I quit

Dried Meat Lake (DML)

Ted's Report:

I had three great sessions on my 5.6 Hucker but probably should have been on my 4.8 or 4.2.  I started out on my shark but then switched to my Stubby.  Unlike Gerry, I found the stubby was pretty good at not picking up the weeds.  I didn't have any problem with it, but need a weed fin on my Shark with the longer fin.

The swell was really good for DML, and the wind was right down the lake and very solid - either strong, really strong, or stupid strong.  There were a few times when I had trouble doing water starts, and several jibes were just a total blow out (literally).  I stopped well before the wind quit.  My arms are a few inches longer than this morning, and I don't know if I will be able to walk tomorrow.  I had a long session in the hot tub after sailing - but unfortunately, no one to share stories with.

Louise was good enough to take some photos...
