2020-09-08 Fall Sailing Trip - Day One (or maybe Day Zero-1)

Lake St. Anne - Alberta Beach

Harold's Report:

Strange day today.  Windfinder said there would be the wind at Lac Ste Anne.  The 511 Road Reports perked up about 1PM.  So I started driving and couldn’t see a leaf moving all the way.  Al and I pulled into the parking lot, looked at the water, and debated even rigging.  But what the heck....

Al, Vadim, and I sailed out and blasted.  Partly it was already windy but we couldn’t tell, and partly we think it cut in just as we hit the water. We estimated later that it was a steady 35 kph.  Perfect for my 6.1, Al’s 6.5, and Vadim’s 6.5.  Great swells and good blasting.

Ross showed up and put on a show.  Looked like fairly small kites from a distance.

Harold originally reported that Andreas had also been kiting, but it was quickly pointed out by the group that Andreas was still in Fort McMurray.

We wrapped up about 2 hours later, but Ross stayed out and put on a different kind of show trying to sail his foil.

Very satisfying day.

Ross's Report:

I foiled 7m until 1700.  Foiled 7m at Ma-me-o yesterday and at Lac St Anne on Sat.  I am slowly getting the hang of it, starting to turn down waves,  getting going without too many issues.....and falling flat on my face when I try to gybe.

It seemed like there was a fair amount of standing around on the windsurfers, at times.

Still, it was about 10degC warmer today than yesterday.

Fall Sailing Trip

Ted's Report:

The trip was supposed to start on Wednesday, but then Brad said he was going up Tuesday to help Jim set up.  I asked if I could come as well, and Jim said OK.  I got to Jim's at just before 2:00 pm.  Jim, Brad, Blaine, and Mike were all there.

Blaine rigged his foil board with 6.0 flyer, but then the wind dropped.  We sat around for a while, and it came up a bit, so Jim and I went out on SUP's and my Wind Wings.  It was a tricky launch because the wind was straight on shore, so even though there wasn't much wind, there was a fair swell.  AND, you had to go upwind right away.  No chance to learn how to do it.

I got out, and Jim followed me with his Kayak.  Once I was upwind, we swapped, and Jim gave it a try.  He got going a couple of times, but the wind had picked up and Jim had trouble keeping the wing tip out of the water.  It is just a matter of learning how to control the wing.  It won't take long in the right conditions!  We will try it again.  I hope the other guys will give it a try as well.

Blaine headed out on his foil board and made it work.  I followed on my foil board and 7.0 Flyer.  Brad and Jim rigged, but the wind dropped.  I did a lot of slogging but did have a couple of good runs.

We sat around catching up and had a few beers.  Jim cooked up some pizza for supper.  Handre came over for a visit.  He works tomorrow, but will visit again tomorrow night, and then join us for the weekend.

It was a great first day - even if there wasn't much wind.
